Project Description
Collection: WQXR Digitization Project: Robert Sherman programming 1969-2008
Description: New York Public Radio (NYPR) will digitize and reformat former WQXR Host Robert “Bob” Sherman’s collection of WQXR programming from 1969-2008. NYPR will complete reformatting for 121 digital audio tapes (DATs) containing material that is owned by New York Public Radio and which has not previously been reformatted. This material contains produced programs and production materials for a variety of WQXR radio series hosted by Bob Sherman, including The Listening Room (1970-1993), Young Artists Showcase (1978-2023), and Woody's Children (1969-1999), among others, which demonstrate the breadth and depth of Sherman's career as an expert in and champion of both folk and classical music. Young Artists Showcase in particular is one of the primary sources of the raw production materials, which are predominantly full recordings of live classical music performances by conservatory students, in many cases likely the first professional recordings of these young performers, many of whom are now prominent and respected classical music performers. Such figures include violinist Sheryl Staples, Principal Associate Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic; Daniel Lee, principal cellist of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; and Zhan Shu, First Violin of The Cleveland Orchestra.
