FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The City College Libraries invites applications for a 12-month tenure-track library faculty position at the Instructor or Assistant Professor rank to serve as Assistant Archivist / Instruction and Research Librarian. Under the direction of our lead Archivist, will support the work of the Archives and Special Collections, in particular as it expands to closer collaboration with our Digital Scholarship Services team. The successful candidate will also work with the Head of Reference and Information Literacy Librarian and colleagues to develop and offer reference and library instruction. The Assistant Archivist may also be assigned collection development duties. All members of the library faculty must maintain a record of excellence in publishing, teaching, and service.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inventory, process, and create finding aids for archival collections.
- Manage the digitization process of archival materials.
- Use Archives Space, JSTOR Forum, and other tools and platforms to manage archival collections.
- Helps supervise part time staff and interns, including the development of training materials and documentation.
- Maintains knowledge of and engages in continuous professional development to keep up with current and developing standards and practices in archival work.
- Collaborate, coordinate, and communicate with Digital Scholarship Services team.
- Provide virtual and in-person general reference services, both in Archives and Cohen Library, including individual consultations, for the college community. Some evening and weekend reference desk service is required.
- Establish and maintain relationships with assigned academic departments and programs by serving as their subject specialist, collection development librarian, library instructor.
- Offer instruction to students and faculty to create timely, targeted, and curriculum-integrated library instruction, support and discipline-specific presentations for programs, courses, or assignments.
- Create instructional material (research guides, etc.) as appropriate.
- Represent the City College Libraries in library, college, and university venues.
- Contribute to the profession through active participation in library and university committees, conferences, associations, research, writing, etc.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
For Instructor designation:
- Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution.
- If appointed as Instructor, the candidate will be expected to complete an additional graduate degree within 5 years
For Assistant Professor designation:
- A second Master's Degree or Ph.D. degree.
- Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or creative achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
EXPERIENCE:
- Familiarity with metadata and vocabulary standards such as Dublin Core, CDWA, Getty vocabularies.
- Knowledgeable about current and emerging trends in archiving.
- Experience using Archives Space.
- Familiarity with tools for digital assets such as JSTOR Forum, Omeka, or Scalar.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, and strong analytical, organizational, and planning skills.
- Excellent interpersonal qualities, a commitment to collaboration and mutual respect, and the ability to work efficiently and effectively on shared projects and committees in our multicultural library and college/university community.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access).
- Demonstrated proficiency in archival accessioning, processing, and preparation of finding aids for internal and external users.
- Ability to lift and move boxes up to 40 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two or more years of experience as an archivist.
- Certificate in archival management.
- Demonstrated proficiency in ArchivesSpace.
- Demonstrated knowledge of digital management tools and platforms.
- Demonstrated knowledge of one or more non-MARC metadata schemes such as Dublin Core, CWDA, etc.
- Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite.
- Knowledge of archival preservation, arrangement, and descriptive standards.
- Familiarity with digital preservation principles and practices.
- Two or more years of experience as a reference librarian in an academic library, particularly in a diverse community.
- If hired at the Assistant Professor rank, a record of professional, scholarly research activity.
