Job Description
Overview
Under the supervision of the Information Commons division managers, the Info Commons Librarian is responsible for performing professional operations in the Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons at Central Library: reference, programming, outreach, instruction, and special projects related to digital media production. The Librarian works as part of the Info Commons team to provide quality public library service to the community. Will collaborate with other Central and branch staff to identify community needs and develop services accordingly.
Responsibilities
- Provide bibliographic instruction, reference, and other information services
- Plan, conduct, and evaluate a variety of classes and other programs to promote use of the library’s services, facilities, and collections (including online collections and databases)
- Do outreach to community organizations and participate in community events
- Orient visitors to the design software and other technology in the Info Commons
- Assist with preparation and other logistics for Info Commons events
- Assist with troubleshooting technology problems
- Assist visitors with reserving public meeting rooms
- Interpret and implement BPL policy
- Actively participate in mandatory and optional training, including professional development workshops and online training
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school

Public librarian’s professional certificate issued by the State of New York

General experience working with the public and diverse communities

Teaching experience a plus
- Working knowledge of Windows and Mac environments, Microsoft Office, III’s Sierra, major social media platforms
- Familiarity with digital media tools such as cameras, microphones, and Adobe Creative Cloud applications
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and assess problems, and decisively implement appropriate solutions
- Must strive to maintain positive internal and external customer service relationships
- Demonstrate respect and sensitivity for cultural differences and treat people with respect
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate work efficiently
- Ability to work collaboratively and on cross-functional teams
- Knowledge of fundamental principles, practices, and emerging library trends of modern libraries
- Flexible and adaptable to change
- Involvement in professional organizations a plus
- Second Language skills a plus
Public service responsibilities may require standing, moving, throughout the library bending over and reaching to get books off the shelves and items out of files, visiting schools and attending community functions, interacting frequently with the public and lifting light weights. This position requires good speaking and hearing ability, good eyesight and normal strength. Persons with physical limitations, may, with reasonable accommodation, be capable of performing the duties of the positions in this class. Such determination will be on a case by case basis.
This is a union position with a salary of $55,027. After 6 months, librarians receive an increase of $1985.
