TITLE: Criminal Justice Librarian (Tenure Track)

SUMMARY: The Rutgers University Libraries seeks a proactive, collaborative, and user-centered librarian for this tenure-track position based in the John Cotton Dana Library. The position reports to the Associate University Librarian – Newark and will work closely with the School of Criminal Justice (SCJ) Dean and the SCJ Library Committee and its diverse community of faculty, students, and staff. The Criminal Justice Librarian will place a particular emphasis on reference, instruction, collection development, and outreach activities that will contribute to the academic success of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in SCJ programs. This position will be knowledgeable about scholarly communication trends in this field and will manage the Gottfredson Library collection, widely regarded as one of the leading collections of criminal justice materials in the world. As a member of the Libraries’ faculty, the selected candidate will provide general reference and instruction services to the broader University community.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The key responsibilities of the Criminal Justice Librarian are to:
- Serve as the library subject liaison for the SCJ, providing library instruction, research assistance, and in-depth consultations for criminal justice-related research in the Gottfredson Library,
- Provide a full range of reference services to the University community to include participating in the library reference and instruction activities of the Gottfredson and Dana Libraries via multiple modalities,
- Participate in the collection development activities of the Gottfredson and Dana Libraries, including the selection, assessment, and management of the Gottfredson Library collections and resources in multiple formats, including monographs and a highly specialized grey literature database,
- Engage with the SCJ administration, faculty, students, and the larger community through educational and outreach activities to promote programs and services such as the Gottfredson Library Fellows visiting scholar program, and
- Contribute to the strategic direction and initiatives of the Rutgers University Libraries system, the SCJ, and Rutgers University-Newark.
This position is a member of the Rutgers University Libraries Faculty, a team of librarians committed to providing first-rate public services to a diverse academic community. This position is expected to collaborate with colleagues across the Libraries to enhance the effectiveness of library services to the University community. This position may require working evenings and weekends. The successful candidate will be motivated, ambitious, and a team player. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to continual professional development through scholarly research including publications, presentations, and participation and leadership in the work of relevant professional associations, as required elements for successful promotion and tenure at Rutgers University Libraries.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: A master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution. Demonstrated knowledge of criminal justice and related academic disciplines. Experience with providing specialized and general library reference and instruction in a variety of modalities. Experience with collection development. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with varying audiences. A demonstrated determination to foster diversity as an organizational priority. The ability to build fruitful relationships and partnerships within the library and the university. The ideal candidate should be able to understand institutional cultures and their impact on people and perspectives.
Demonstrated commitment to continual professional development through scholarly research and publication activities
Preferred: Educational background in criminology, criminal justice, or a related area. Experience serving as liaison librarian to a criminal justice department/school. Experience in developing in-depth collections. Experience in the design and delivery of engaging learning activities and services for diverse populations.

SALARY: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
STATUS/BENEFITS: Faculty status, twelve-month appointment, retirement plan, life/health insurance, prescription drug, dental and vision plans, tuition remission, 22 vacation days annually.

John Cotton Dana Library and Institute of Jazz Studies: The John Cotton Dana Library, named after former Newark Public Library director John Cotton Dana, opened in 1966 and is the main library at Rutgers University–Newark, supporting all the institution’s undergraduate and graduate programs except for law. Dana Library houses Rutgers University Libraries’ research collections in business, nursing, and neuroscience and contains over 600,000 volumes, 600,000 pieces of microform, and 15,000 audiovisual items. An intellectual hub of the university and locus of student activity, the library hosts Rutgers–Newark’s largest computer lab and conducts a popular workshop series for graduate students.
