Job Description
Reporting directly to the Director, Youth and Family Services, the Coordinator, School Age Services will be responsible for the coordination and development of policies and plans for services to school children in the branch libraries. The Coordinator will oversee system-wide planning, guidance and delivery of library services to children including the evaluation of materials; public programming; staff development and in-service training; the creation and editing of printed materials and web pages for school-age children; planning for new services and programs. The Coordinator will ensure that services offered are innovative and responsive to the diverse needs of the multi-lingual/multi-cultural school-aged communities of Brooklyn. Inherent in this position and keeping with BPL’s core values, is the advocacy of excellent customer service.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinates staff development and training modules
- Maintains ongoing awareness and evaluation of library trends and services to school-age children
- Participates in the development and interpretation of system-wide policies
- Uses various social media platforms to promote children’s programs and services
- Manages the system-wide Summer Reading Initiative
- Manages grant-funded projects, including proposals, implementation, and evaluation
- Develops and maintains grant budgets
- Visits branches regularly to promote quality children’s services
- Provides guidance, mentoring, and coaching to children’s services staff
- Conducts regularly scheduled team and staff meetings
- Develops & maintains partnerships with local, state and national groups related to children’s services
- Represents BPL in educational, professional and community groups including the New York City School Library System Council
Qualifications:
Education and/or Certification
- M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school
- Public librarian’s professional certificate issued by the State of New York
Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of materials, services and trends in children’s librarianship
- Demonstrated skills in the areas of analysis, problem solving and decision making
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication abilities
- Experience with technologies including electronic resources and social media platforms
- Successfully demonstrated experience with staff development and in-service training
- Understanding of societal developments regarding the needs of children, their families and communities
- Confirmed expertise in budget principles and practices
Professional Experience
- Five years supervisory experience in a public library setting, preferably working with children
This is a non-union, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $75,000-$80,000.
