Job Description
ARCHIVES LIBRARIAN (St. John’s University)
Responsible for the management and leadership of the University Archives and Special Collections, the Archives Librarian will lead the continued growth and ongoing preservation of the physical and digital collections. Reporting to the University Librarian, they will take an active role in collecting, preserving, and providing access to the University Archives; processing and preserving physical collections; providing access to and promoting the use of collections to researchers and the campus community; developing and implementing an archival digitization plan; and implementing procedures for appraising, processing, preserving and providing access to physical and digital collections and, supervising 1 FTE and student workers/graduate assistants as needed.
Essential Functions:
- Processes archival and manuscript materials and creates associated on line finding aids and databases
- Provides reference services, instruction and research assistance in Archives and Special Collections
- Engage in planning and providing oversight for archival processing, arrangement, description of archival and manuscript collections, working closely with the head of information management and cataloging to create/update records
- Carry out research and answer inquiries on the history of the University, representing the Archives and Special Collections on library and University committees
- Prepare monthly and annual reports and statistics about departmental collections, services and usage
- Works with the University Librarian and/or the Associate University Librarian to establish and/or review policies and procedures
- Curates and installs both physical and virtual exhibitions
- Maintains accuracy of content websites
- Works closely with University departments, programs and offices to support anniversaries, events and publications relating to significant historical milestones
- Manage and oversee distinctive collections including the University Archives, Special Collections, the Asian Library and art collections
- Engage in professional development activities
- Supervise 1 FTE as well as student workers and graduate assistants as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Competencies
- MLS/MLIS with a concentration in archives or other graduate degree with Certificate in Archival Studies
- Demonstrated proficiency in archival theory and practice, especially accessioning, processing and description, including minimal and basic processing strategies
- Familiarity with library and archival descriptive and content standards including Dublin Core, DACS, EAD and MARC
- Proficiency in use of ContentDM
- Minimum one year of work experience in an archival repository processing collections and providing reference services in person and remotely to a diverse constituency
- Applied processing experience including appraisal, accessioning, arranging, and describing archival collections of varying sizes and complexity according to best practices
- Demonstrated organizational skills in project management and working collaboratively in a team, including setting, tracking and meeting goals and tight deadlines as well as evaluating outcomes
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and attention to detail
- Self-motivated and able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively across the institution
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of digital technologies within the field
Supervisory Responsibility
This position supervises archives administrative technician, and student workers/graduate assistants as needed. This position is responsible for the hiring and performance evaluation within the University Archives and Special Collections.
Work Environment
This position operates in a professional office environment; This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, scanners, etc.
