METRO Privacy Policy

This Privacy Statement applies to the Metropolitan New York Library Council (“METRO,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) when we act as the controller of your Personal Data. METRO takes your privacy seriously, and we will not sell, lease, or exchange your personal data to, or otherwise share your personal data with, third parties in ways other than described in this Privacy Statement.

1. Personal Data Collected by METRO

The categories of Personal Data that we collect, and the duration for which we retain it, depend on how you use the METRO website.

(i) Information You Provide Directly during the following activities

  • Subscribing to the METRO Newsletter or community listservs
  • Registering for events 
  • Applying for continuing education scholarships or grant opportunities
  • Proposing webinars, workshops, or conference sessions
  • Submitting job postings or applying for a position at METRO
  • Direct Communication to a @metro.org email address

(ii) Information We Collect Automatically

  • Website Usage Data — When you visit our website, we may automatically log information about how you interact with the site, such as the referring site, date and time of visit, and the pages you have viewed or links you have clicked.
  • Cookies and Tracking Technologies — METRO uses cookies and similar tracking technologies to provide functionality, such as storing your settings, and to recognize you as you use our website.

Residents of the European Union (EU) and California have strong rights related to the use of your data. METRO chooses to apply these rights to all customers regardless of location.

Under EU GDPR, EU residents’ rights include the following:

  • The right to access — You have the right to request copies of your personal data.
  • The right to rectification — You have the right to request that we correct any information you believe is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • The right to erasure — You have the right to request that we erase your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to restrict processing — You have the right to request that we restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to object to processing — You have the right to object to our processing of your personal data, under certain conditions. 
  • The right to data portability — You have the right to request that we transfer the data that we have collected to another organization, or directly to you, under certain conditions.

Under CCPA, California residents’ rights include the following:

  • Request that a business delete any personal data about the consumer that a business has collected.
  • Request that a business that collects a consumer’s personal data disclose the categories and specific pieces of personal data that a business has collected about consumers.
  • Request that a business that sells a consumer’s personal data, not sell the consumer’s personal data. Please note that METRO does not sell personal data.
  • Right to non-discrimination of service or price if you exercise your privacy rights.

METRO will complete all requests within 30 days. 

3. Children’s Privacy

We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the age of 16. If you are a parent or guardian of a minor child and believe that a child has disclosed online personal data to us, please contact us using the details provided in Section 5.

4. Changes to this Privacy Statement

We will update this Privacy Statement from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, legal requirements, and other factors. If we do, we will update the “effective date” at the top. If we make a material update, we may provide you with notice prior to the update taking effect, such as by posting a notice on our website or by contacting you directly, or where required under applicable law and feasible, seek your consent to these changes.
