We are pleased to announce that METRO has joined the International Image Interoperability Framework Consortium as an Associate member.
IIIF is a set of open standards for delivering high-quality, attributed digital objects online at scale. It’s also an international community developing and implementing the IIIF APIs. IIIF is backed by a consortium of leading cultural institutions. In addition to supporting the IIIF community financially, these institutions contribute to the APIs, Community Groups, and more.
“METRO is an important hub of the library, archives, and museum and sits in one of the richest aggregation of such institutions in the world,” said Martin Kalfatovic, Managing Director of the IIIF Consortium. “METRO’s work on the Archipelago Commons is an important IIIF repository platform supporting the community and their digital collections.”
The Digital Services Team at METRO supports the development and implementation of Archipelago Commons, or simply Archipelago, an open source repository platform. There are over 30+ production deployments of Archipelago in the United States and internationally. IIIF APIs and IIIF compliant viewer customizations are woven into Archipelago’s architecture and functionality. METRO’s Digital Services Team and Archipelago repository users have been participating in IIIF community meetings, committees, and conferences for many years.
