Position: Student Archivist (Part-Time)
Location: Baruch College, William & Anita Newman Library’s Archives and Special Collections Division
Appointment Duration: up to 6 to 9 months, to begin in Summer 2026
Hours: approximately 14 hours per week, 450 hours total available; ideally one workday should be Monday or Wednesday
Hourly Rate: $30/hr.
Baruch College’s Newman Library is currently seeking applicants for a part-time Student Archivist role at its Archives and Special Collections Division.
The Student Archivist will work on-site at Baruch College in support of our grant-funded project processing and digitizing our recently acquired Edmond J. Safra / Republic National Bank of New York Collection. This significant archival resource documents the business legacy of Edmond J. Safra, who led the bank from its inception in 1966 until its sale in 1999. The collection covers the business activities of the bank, including capital building activities, institutional leadership, banking history, entrepreneurship, finance, and corporate communications, and highlights Safra’s focus on banking ethically, protecting depositors, and avoiding excessive leverage and risks.
The Student Archivist will report to our Safra Project Archivist for approximately 14 hours per week for a total of 450 hours. We are particularly interested in students who have availability to work with us on Mondays and/or Wednesdays.
The Student Archivist will support the Project Archivist in tasks such as arranging, describing, and rehousing collection materials; publishing DACS-compliant finding aids using ArchivesSpace; digitizing collecting materials; managing digital files and their metadata; conducting basic preservation tasks, including work with a HEPA vacuum to address dust and de-activated mold; and/or participating in the collection of oral histories from employees of the Republic National Bank of New York.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled student in an MLIS or MLIS/History graduate program, or recent graduate
- At least one year of previous hands-on experience working with archival collections (including part-time positions, internships, etc.)
- Familiarity with archival standards for preservation, arrangement, and description
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with metadata and archival description standards (DACS, EAD, and Dublin Core)
- Previous experience digitizing print collections and managing metadata
- Working knowledge of ArchivesSpace or similar collection management software tools
- Familiarity with conducting and processing oral histories
