The Assistant Library Director IV – Facilities & Operations is a key member of the
Library’s senior leadership team, responsible for aligning facilities, safety, technology,
and operational infrastructure with the Library’s mission, strategic goals, and evolving
community needs.
This role provides executive-level oversight of Maintenance, Security, Technology/IT,
and Procurement, while also serving as a thought partner to the Library Director and
Assistant Directors on capital planning, risk management, and organizational
sustainability.
This position is well suited to a senior librarian who has managed people and projects
and is ready to take on broader system-wide responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
● Serve as a core member of the Library’s executive team, contributing to
organizational planning, policy development, and long-term strategy.
● Provide strategic leadership for all library facilities, including buildings, grounds,
and physical infrastructure.
● Supervise and mentor department heads and staff in Maintenance, Security,
Technology/IT, and Procurement.
● Lead capital projects, renovations, space planning, and infrastructure
improvements from planning through implementation.
● Ensure library buildings and systems support high-quality public services,
programming, and staff operations.
● Oversee safety, security, emergency preparedness, and risk management
across all facilities.
● Collaborate with senior leadership to align operational systems with service
priorities and community engagement goals.
● Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, accessibility standards, and
regulatory requirements.
● Develop, evaluate, and update operational policies and procedures.
● Prepare reports, analyses, and recommendations for the Library Director, Board,
and other stakeholders.
● Serve as a senior institutional resource for operational decision-making and
continuity planning.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Strong understanding of library administration and public-sector operations.
● Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams, budgets, and complex
projects.
● Knowledge of facilities management, technology systems, and operational
planning.
● Ability to think strategically while managing day-to-day operational realities.
● Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
● Sound judgment, initiative, and a problem-solving mindset.
● Commitment to public service and inclusive, community-centered library work.
Minimum Qualifications
● A Master’s Degree in Librarianship from a library school that is accredited by the
American Library Association or recognized by the New York State Education
Department as following acceptable education practices;
● Six (6) years of progressively responsible professional library experience,
including at least one year in an administrative or senior supervisory role.
● Experience overseeing or collaborating with facilities, technology, security, or
operational functions preferred.
● Demonstrated success in leadership, project management, and cross-
departmental collaboration.
Special Requirements
● Ability to respond to emergency situations outside of normal working hours.
● Appointment subject to Civil Service rules and procedures.
Salary & Benefits
● Starting at $110,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
