Summary
The Catalog Librarian maintains the catalog’s efficiency and consistency while copy cataloging and enhancing records for incoming materials and editing existing records in the catalog to ensure the best access to materials.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- An ALA-accredited MLS with a minimum of one cataloging course
- Knowledge of cataloging standards, including RDA, AACR2, LCSH, and DDC
- Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail
Preferred:
- Minimum 1 year of related experience copy cataloging
- Experience working with OCLC Connexion and Innovative Interfaces Sierra Integrated Library System
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform copy cataloging of materials, primarily printed monographs, in OCLC Connexion according to RDA, AACR2, LCSH, and DDC
- Import records for electronic books and audiobooks, edit using MarcEdit
- Maintain consistency and completeness of the catalog in Sierra ILS
- Update and enhance existing bibliographic records
- Import and update name, title, series, and subject authority records
- Assist with any other bibliographic and metadata projects assigned by the supervisor, including work with the Library’s special collections
- Consult with the supervisor to periodically update cataloging procedures
- Comply with all Library policies and procedures
- Serves on the reference team
- Receives imports from OCLC Connexion and generates labels and prepares books for the pages to process
- Handles deaccessioning and withdrawing weeded and damaged materials from the catalog
- Contributes regularly to the library blog
- Catalogs all juvenile titles for Children’s Library
- Catalogs ebooks and audiobooks

About the Library:
The New York Society Library is an independent library founded in 1754 with a mission to connect books and people in an environment of intellectual freedom. The Library today is open to all for reading, reference, exhibitions, and selected events. Memberships provide additional benefits, including circulation privileges, access to beautiful writing and study spaces, and member-only events. The Library’s beautiful, landmarked building dates from 1917 and includes reading rooms, spaces for study, book stacks, and the Assunta, Ignazio, Ada and Romano Peluso Exhibition Gallery. The Library has approximately 300,000 volumes and hosts a variety of special events, reading groups, and workshops, as well as the New York City Book Awards.
Working Conditions:
This is a full-time position with the following schedule: Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm.
Physical/Environmental Requirements Physical:
Sitting: 70-80%
Standing/Walking: 20-30%
Lifting: Occasional to frequent lifting up to 30 lbs.
Vision: Normal.
Requires long periods of work at computers.
Indoor environment: Working closely with others and independently.
Occasional exposure to dust and mold.
Salary and Benefits Compensation:
$57,000 – $65,000 commensurate with experience and including a full benefits package comprising health/dental/vision plans, 403(b) defined contribution plan, flexible benefits plan, vacation, holiday, and sick time.
