The Gottesman Libraries seeks a Collections Acquisition and Metadata Librarian who plays a key role in strengthening research holdings in education, psychology, and the applied health sciences to meet the needs of Teachers College.
Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Collections Acquisition and Metadata Librarian manages patron-driven and selected standing orders for print and electronic book acquisitions. Oversees ordering, processing, labeling, shifting, and weeding workflows, as well as cataloging and bibliographic metadata management. Guides and implements relevant policies, practices, standards, and metadata schemas to enhance the representation and discoverability of the collection across local, community, and global systems.
The incumbent collaborates across library technical services and works closely with other library units on collection development needs and projects that improve the organization, description, and access to library holdings. In doing so, the role supports the strategic priorities of the Library and the College, with a particular emphasis on advancing leadership in digital library technologies.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage Print and ebook Acquisitions within policy guidelines and budget using library technologies and vendor platforms
- Oversee and monitor monographic orders, claims, receipts, and processing
- Perform copy and original cataloging
- Remediate records created by vendors, community, and/or AI
- Conduct authority control, including preferred subject headings and cutters; add updated records to WorldCat
- Address new schema for barcodes
- Coordinate the maintenance of the collection through regular shifting and weeding, location changes, relabeling, and updated bibliographic and/or item records
- Manage metadata by creating and running normalization rules
- Identify and handle remediation projects to improve the catalog and advise on cataloging schemas
- Participate in campus-wide committees and library working groups
- Maintain expertise in acquisitions, cataloging, and metadata
- Report on activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science accredited by the American Library Association
- One-two years of related job experience in an academic library
- Experience with Exlibris’ Alma: Acquisitions, Resources, Analytics, Metadata Editor; familiarity with vendor platforms
- Excellent technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office and Springshare
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong ability to work both independently and collegially
Preferred Qualifications:
- Supervisory experience
- Knowledge of trends in higher education libraries, including critical awareness of AI in technical services
