Barchives 34: Archiving The Projects: From Gowanus, With Love

In-Person

Gowanus, Brooklyn– maybe most often in headlines related to canal clean-up efforts and gentrification—is also home to longstanding residents who have lived through decades of changes to the neighborhood. In this installment of Barchives, Kellie Marty will talk to us about her community-based archives project for NYC public housing, focusing on the Gowanus Houses. Kellie will share her personal photos and memories of her time living in Gowanus Houses, a NYCHA housing project built in 1949, from 2014 to present.

Kellie would love to see people who are current or former public housing residents at this Barchives! Everyone in attendance–whether a NYCHA resident or not—is encouraged to bring their own stories, photos (digital or physical), or videos of their homes to share.

Hosting us will be Canal Bar, an institution that’s made its home on the banks of the storied Gowanus Canal.  We’ll hear more about the bar’s history and community as we chat about what it means to make a home in Gowanus.

This event is co-sponsored by the METRO.
