POSITION SUMMARY: Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) seeks a dynamic, creative, and experienced individual for the Access Services department. This position reports to the Director of Paul Robeson Library. Under the direction of the Director of Paul Robeson Library the successful candidate will provide overall administrative management and supervision of the Robeson Library day-to-day operations and performance of the Access Services Department comprised of circulation, reserves, document delivery, interlibrary loan/resource sharing, collection maintenance and management, student workers coordination, assessment and quality control, space, facilities and security coordination, and marketing/outreach. The position directly supervises a total of six union employees, plus hourly staff and student workers.

This position serves as liaison for Paul Robeson Library Access Services across the Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) system, all offices and schools on the Rutgers-Camden campus and works directly with the Libraries Central Human Resources and Budgeting Office. While final authority rests with the Director of the Robeson Library, the individual is expected to develop and propose policy, ensuring compliance with university and library best practices and shape an overall philosophy of Access Services at Robeson library. This position is responsible for providing recommendations to the Director related to organizational and strategic planning for related areas and working with the Director to discuss priorities & vision for Access Services.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Hires, trains, directs, and supervises full time unionized staff and part-time workers. Oversees staff scheduling. Analyzes and implements changes to work-flows and procedures, develops and revises procedure manuals. Writes job descriptions, evaluates staff performance and completes performance appraisal reviews. Oversees the Federal Work Study program. Approves requests for time off and oversees payroll preparation. Serves on and may lead teams that recommend policy, proposes plans and implements direction of the library or service unit, and implement projects.

Resolves operational and patron issues. Provides oversight, facilitation, and supervision of facilities management, planning and evaluation. Ensures the security, functionality, and availability of the building, equipment, and library collections. Stays abreast of budgetary needs and provides expenditure reports. Collects and analyzes a variety of data and information. Performs statistical analysis and summarizes findings for annual, midyear, and project reports for Access Services. Performs special projects to assist the work of the Paul Robeson Library Director and other duties as assigned. May be involved with major event design, promotion, and implementation as needed. Coordinates professional development events for staff, to model and maintain high quality, user-centric standards of service. Assists the Director with the facilitation of staff meetings as directed. Job includes some evenings and weekends.


Required: Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Minimum 2 year’s supervisory experience. Preferred: Demonstrated proficiency with Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo. Supervisory experience with unionized employees and bargaining unit agreements a plus. Experience with assessment of user services. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.


Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
