Catalog and Metadata Strategies Specialist - Adelphi University Libraries

Under general supervision of the unit head, the Catalog and Metadata Specialist will independently handle a variety of functions, including: supervising cataloging staff and student workers, and the daily operations of the cataloging unit, Original and copy cataloging of a variety of materials in a variety of formats, including print and electronic; applying metadata to digital resources such as our institutional repository and special collections digital collections; assist in the cataloging for special collections materials; provide general catalog maintenance; contribute to the working of metadata for our academic consortium; keep abreast of emerging trends, innovations and best practices affecting library systems, catalogs, and metadata standards. The Specialist will work independently and exercise good judgment in decision making, following established practices and procedures.


Perform original and copy-cataloging for a wide range of resources. Perform original and copy-cataloging for special collections materials. Apply metadata to digital resources and collections. Ensure the integrity of the catalog by conducting catalog maintenance. Assist in working with our academic consortium. Supervise and train two Cataloging Administrative Assistants and student workers. Respond to questions about the unit operations in the absence of the unit head. Other job-related duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree and experience working in an academic library is required. At least two years of experience working in a cataloging unit is highly preferred. Knowledge of cataloging schemas, rules and systems is highly preferred. Required to work independently, show independent decision making, and an ability to problem-solve in a timely manner. Must have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as a team to achieve library goals. Ability to work with computer software such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Knowledge of cataloging schemas, rules and systems such as MARC, RDA, FRBR, Dublin Core, user-contributed metadata, Library of Congress Classification System, and Library of Congress Subject Headings. Familiarity with an integrated library system, such as Innovative Interfaces’ Sierra. Working knowledge of OCLC Connexion. Ability to adapt to changing technology, digital resources and electronic formats is essential. A willingness for professional development and continuous improvement of skills by taking courses and workshops. Ability to work effectively and congenially with a diverse population of faculty, students and staff. Ability to take the initiative in providing services to library users.
