Bibliographic Assistant - New York Society Library

The bibliographic assistant processes materials being added to and withdrawn from the library’s holdings, including editing and updating of records in the online catalog, and assists with the care and usage of special collections materials.


• Preparing library materials for circulation

• Maintaining the online catalog by editing and managing records; including item-level and bibliographic-level information

• Reclassifying library materials, acting as a liaison between involved departments

• Supervising rare book readers whenever special collections materials are in use

• Assessing and maintaining metadata for City Readers, NYSL’s digital humanities initiative

• Assisting with any other bibliographic projects assigned by the supervisor, including work with the Library’s rare book collection

• Managing New York Society Library’s digital and paper-based special collections reader records

• Consulting with the supervisor to periodically update cataloging procedures

• Complying with all Library policies and procedures


• Bachelor’s degree; library coursework preferred

• Attentiveness to detail

• Ability to work closely with others as well as independently

• Preferred: Some previous library work experience

• Preferred: Experience using Innovative Interfaces ILS
