Rutgers University Libraries is seeking an experienced, innovative, and service-oriented individual to fill the position of Archivist for Women Artists’ Collections for the New Brunswick Libraries. This non-tenure track full-time faculty position will process manuscript collections, prepare and encode finding aids, support digital initiatives related to women artists, and provide reference service for researchers using the Miriam Schapiro Archives on Women Artists. This position will report to the Associate Director, Special Collections and University Archives, working closely with staff and librarians across campuses. This position is based out of the Archibald S. Alexander Library located on the College Avenue campus. The successful candidate will begin immediately and must demonstrate a commitment to continual professional development through librarianship and service. This is a one-year position and may be renewable. Performs related duties as assigned.


The Archivist for Women Artists’ Collections will:

• Arrange and describe and create and encode online finding aids for the papers of women artists and the records of women artists’ organizations, including the National Association for Women Artists (NAWA) and several New Jersey women artists’ collections. The Archivist will also work on the papers of Rush D. Holt, Jr. Digitize and complete metadata for catalogs of NAWA’s annual exhibition.

• Maintain the Miriam Schapiro Archives webpage, adding new content, and developing appropriate resources.

• Answer reference questions related to the women artists’ collections.

• Develop social media and other outreach activities related to the Miriam Schapiro Archives.

• Supervise students in processing collections.


ALA accredited Master’s degree in library and information science and/or Master’s degree in art history or an allied field; 2-5 years’ experience arranging, describing, and providing access to archival collections in a research library; supervisory experience; and extensive knowledge of subject matter. Knowledge web HTML and EAD markup highly desirable. Visa sponsorship not available for this position.


Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
