The Robert W. Van Houten Library at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks applications for the position of Science and Engineering Librarian.
Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Reference, the Science and Engineering Librarian (SEL) assists, advises and instructs users in assessing and accessing information in all formats. The Science and Engineering Librarian serves as a liaison to designated academic departments in STEM disciplines to support instruction, collection development and research. The incumbent has the primary responsibility to provide education and training in support of open access, copyright, and digital scholarship processes (research support, data/digital stewardship, and open publishing.) The candidate should demonstrate abilities to work both independently and in a team environment and have excellent oral and written communication skills, teaching, and technology skills. This is a non-tenure track professional staff position. Typical workweek includes one evening (until 7:00 pm) per week during fall and spring semesters and may consist of several weekends per year.
Qualifications Summary: An ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS/MSLS degree and a bachelor’s or an advanced degree in a STEM discipline (or equivalent) and at least two years of professional reference and library instruction experience in an academic or similar library setting with strong knowledge of STEM resources. The candidate must demonstrate research experience using information resources, library social media applications, creation of guides and tutorials, course management systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office. The candidate must demonstrate the abilities to work creatively and collaboratively to promote teamwork.
Library Profile: The Robert W. Van Houten Library, NJIT’s university library, houses a core collection of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), business, humanities, and social sciences resources, and has an Information Commons computer lab with more than 120 computer workstations and wireless access throughout the building. The Barbara and Leonard Littman Architecture, Art and Design Library, a branch of the university library, maintains a core collection of architecture, art, and design resources. The Libraries have a staff of 24, who are committed to developing innovations in access services, information and digital literacies, and digital initiatives. The Libraries have an annual operating budget of $4.5 million and spend over 94% of the materials budget to acquire scholarly electronic resources for anytime, anywhere access. The collection comprises over 439,000+ volumes with 34 full-text databases, over 63,000 electronic journals, 216,000+ ebooks, and 223,000 physical holdings. The Libraries use Ex Libris Alma and Primo Discovery, OCLC, ILLiad, RapidILL, and Digital Commons.
