Library User Services Specialist
Position Summary: The Library User Services Specialist is responsible for marketing and promoting library services and programs through a variety of channels including print and online social media platforms to support the curricular and research endeavors of the university. The specialist works closely with administration to create and implement strategies to increase visibility of the university library. The position demands a self-starter with proven strong customer service and communication skills, excellent organizational ability, and the skills to handle a broad spectrum of duties. The specialist will be the point of contact to assist with all matters related to user services and resource sharing services in absence of the Director of Circulation and Interlibrary Loan and the Evening Library Supervisor. The successful candidate will have an eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and have the ability to make independent judgments.
The incumbent will work a flexible schedule as necessary, including open houses, special events, and occasional evening hours. The typical work schedule for fall and spring semesters is Sunday to Thursday (Sunday, 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm; Monday to Thursday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm). The work schedule for summer sessions varies, depending on the academic calendar and the needs of the library.
Qualifications Summary: The ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated record of excellence with substantial background and experience in graphic design, marketing/communications (at least 3 years) and considerable understanding of library principles, knowledge, and experience (at least 2 years). Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with computer systems and software including Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher) and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms). Demonstrated experience with digital design tools (Adobe Suite, Illustrator, etc.), web authoring tools (HTML, CSS), and social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc.) Demonstrated experience employing marketing and communication strategies to create publicity materials and maintain social media accounts. Demonstrated understanding of data analytics to design and administer surveys and reports, and provide recommendations for service improvements based on gathered data and information.
Library Profile: The Robert W. Van Houten Library, NJIT’s university library, houses a core collection of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), business, humanities, and social sciences resources, and has an Information Commons computer lab with more than 120 computer workstations and wireless access throughout the building. The Barbara and Leonard Littman Architecture, Art and Design Library, a branch of the university library, maintains a core collection of architecture, art, and design resources. The Libraries have a staff of 24, who are committed to developing innovations in access services, information and digital literacies, and digital initiatives. The Libraries have an annual operating budget of $4.5 million and spend over 94% of the materials budget to acquire scholarly electronic resources for anytime, anywhere access. The collection comprises over 439,000+ volumes with 34 full-text databases, over 63,000 electronic journals, 216,000+ ebooks, and 223,000 physical holdings. The Libraries use Ex Libris Alma and Primo Discovery, OCLC, ILLiad, RapidILL, and Digital Commons.
