JOB TITLE: Librarian I (Emerging Collections & Technologies)

DIVISION: Communications & Outreach

LOCATION: Gardner Main Library (position may be moved to another location at a later date)

FULL-TIME/PART-TIME: Full-Time

SALARY EXPECTATION: Position is subject to the NJLA 2020 Minimum of $54,953.

WORKWEEK: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (35 hours/week). May be required to work evenings and weekends as needed.

It is also the largest city in Hudson County, NJ and likely, with the next U.S. Census, to be the largest city in the State of New Jersey with a population nearing 300,000.

The JCFPL is the largest municipal library in the State of New Jersey with 10 locations and a bookmobile. Our staff of nearly 140 provides services in a wide range of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Gujarati, Arabic and Tagalog, among others.

 

About the Position

As part of the Communications & Outreach Division and reporting to a branch manager, the individual in this role is responsible for enhancing community digital inclusion, technological skills and information/media literacy for library patrons and staff, and expanding the types of, contents of, and effective access to the Library’s digital collections. This includes but is not limited to: organizing and conducting library programs and events; assisting patrons and staff in making effective use of library technologies; providing formal training and instruction in the effective use of digital resources; developing strategies, best practices, standards, and technologies that support discovery, access, management, and preservation of the Library’s

 

digital assets; participating in technical project planning and implementation of current and developing digital history and resource access projects and digitization of legacy local history special collections; supporting library staff in planning for and implementing new digital collections and online exhibition projects; researching new and soon-to-be available technologies to assess their relevance and usefulness for reaching Library goals; and performing other duties as assigned.

 

The ideal candidate will have a facility with and enthusiasm for new technologies; a passion for utilizing new technologies for the benefit of the local community; an understanding of the role of libraries and librarians in expanding community access to digital resources and collections; the ability to perform both independently and as a team member; experience in planning and conducting public programs; experience in effectively instructing and training peers and the public in the use of new technologies; an energetic approach to community outreach; excellent communication skills; enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility and a sense of humor.

 

Specific Job Duties:

OUTREACH – Develop community partnerships with schools, community leaders, and organizations.

EVALUATION OF NEEDS – Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate overall programs, services, and activities to ensure they meet library goals and community need.

PROGRAMMING – Design, develop, and implement innovative programs and services to: broaden the impact of new technologies used by the Library; promote technological skills and information/media literacy; and/or foster the use of library resources.

ACCESS – Develop and participate in implementing strategies, best practices, standards, and technologies that support discovery, access, management, and preservation of the Library’s digital assets.

TRAINING – Assists patrons and staff in making effective use of library technologies and provides formal training and instruction in the effective use of digital resources.

RESEARCH – Researches new and soon-to-be available technologies for the purpose of assessing their relevance and usefulness for reaching Library goals.

CUSTOMER SERVICE – Assist patrons in locating, evaluating and effectively using information or resources.

OTHER – Perform all other reasonable duties as assigned by Supervisor.

 

Required Experience:

Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences in a library program accredited by the American Library Association or from a New Jersey College Master’s program in Library Science that has been deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison State University.

May be required to possess a valid certification as a Professional Librarian issued by Thomas Edison State University.

Essential Skills:

Ability to keep informed of current theories, objectives, principles, and techniques of librarianship: and an enthusiasm for adapting new technologies, library trends and innovations.

Ability to identify, customize, create and present innovative programs and services and integrate new technologies into library service.

Ability to provide instruction and technical expertise to professional, paraprofessional and nonprofessional staff.

Preferred Skills:

Fluency in a language other than English, especially one or more of those spoken by a substantial portion of Jersey City’s population, including Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Gujarati, or Tagalog.

Knowledge of Jersey City’s population, geography, and/or local government.

Experience and facility in public speaking and meeting facilitation.

 

This is a Civil Service Job and you must eventually pass and qualify for the

applicable Civil Service title.
