Librarian - Part time

Description
As a highly experienced librarian, I seek a part time postion which would utilize my skills as a reference librarian, cataloger, instructor. I currently work for Empire State College, SUNY, as an adjunct instructor of Information Literacy. My work schedule is late afternoon/early evening two days a week. I am interested in working mornings, or Saturdays. I can cover a Reference Desk, catalog books using OCLC, or teach college students Information Literacy.

EMPIRE STATE COLLEGE, SUNY January 2008 to date


 


Adjunct Lecturer, teaching Information Literacy skills to members of the IBEW Local 3.


Created a syllabus to meet the needs of the students new to the college experience, incorporating hands-on experiences evaluating resources in a library setting. Recently had twelve of my students’ essays included in “Labor Writes”, the annual publication of the VanArsdale School of Labor Studies.


 


 ASA COLLEGE, BROOKLYN, NY       2004 - 2010


 


Adjunct professor of Information Literacy.  I helped create a syllabus aligned with the needs of this diverse student body.  I teach database and Internet research techniques, how to evaluate information for currency and authority, research and write a college level paper as per American Library Association standards.


                      


NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 


 


New Explorations into Science Technology  + Math   2006 - 2008 (Retired)   


· Collaborated with all teachers during the Spring ’07 semester to provide library research instruction to all grades


· Purchased appropriate online databases to support an advanced high school science and math curriculum


· Created, produced and distributed summer reading list bookmarks for grades K thru 9


 


William E. Grady Technical Vocational H.S. 2005 to  2006


Entering in the middle of a reconstruction project, my responsibilities include


· Wrote and won a $4,500 Laura Bush Library Grant


· Supervise full time school aide and team of 15 monitors


· Collaborate with A.P.s to create a collection which supports the technical and vocational curriculum

Administer $40,000 WTC School Fund Grant to refurbish library 


 


WAGNER COLLEGE, STATEN ISLAND NY 1994-1998


Part time Reference Librarian, covering the Reference Desk. I taught students how to use the online card catalog, INFOTRAC, ERIC, CINAHL and PROQUEST databases.  


 


BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY   1974-1985


With increasing promotions and responsibilities, served as the Branch Librarian in charge of the Coney Island Branch Library. Responsible for overall library operations and budget. Train, supervise and evaluate all staff


 


VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE


1990 to 2005 Parent volunteer in Staten Island schools, past Treasurer of PTA for Brooklyn Technical HS and Bard HS Early College.  I served as a parent member of the C-30 committee at IS 51 and at Brooklyn Technical High School. Served as Chair of the Staten Island Federation of PTA’s Legislation Committee, representing the parents of all public school children on Staten Island to all levels of governments. Successfully lobbied to abolish standees on children’s school buses, secured a traffic light at the corner of IS 51 (Houston Street and Willowbrook Road), created “grants” with City Council representatives for PTA activities to promote parent involvement in schools.


 


1994 to date TEMPLE ISRAEL, RANDALL MANOR 


Library Co-Chair, building the library to become the largest Judaica collection on Staten 


Island. Obtained a Legislative Grant to computerize the Temple Library, Served as President of 


the Sisterhood for three years.
