*Part-time, temporary one year position*

The Arthur W. Diamond Law Library of Columbia University invites applications for the position of a part-time, temporary Systems Engineer.  

The Systems Engineer will join the staff of the Library Systems unit of Law Library Technical Services. The Systems Engineer will work under the supervision of the Systems Librarian and work closely with the Electronic Resources Coordinator. The incumbent will upgrade and maintain the Law Library's Linux servers and assist with or lead programming/web development projects for the Law Library. They will also contribute to strategic planning for the Law Library's server and application needs, and assist with supporting existing servers, applications, and other projects.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Deploy, upgrade, document, troubleshoot, monitor, secure, optimize, maintain Library virtual servers, and develop new routines and workflows as necessary
  • Develop, modify, migrate, implement, troubleshoot, document software applications on Library servers, and develop new routines and workflows as necessary
  • Communicate and coordinate efforts with Library and IT staff as required to identify and resolve systems level issues, and coordinate the timing and structure of server-related projects and events
  • Perform other Library Systems tasks as needed; other duties as assigned  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required and minimum of 3 years related experience
  • In-depth knowledge of LAMP environment
  • Knowledge of programming principles and at least one high-level programming language
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with web server administration and systems monitoring
  • Experience with Bash shell-scripting and PHP
  • Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Experience with database administration and optimization
  • Library education or experience
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds.
