Special Project Librarian - Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

The MSK Library supports Memorial Sloan Kettering's mission to improve patient care, support clinical and laboratory research, and enhance education. The Special Project Librarian is a full-time contract position reporting to the Associate Librarian, Technology Initiatives. The candidate’s primary role will be to verify and maintain records for Synapse <https://synapse.mskcc.org>, MSK’s institutional repository of publications.  Responsibilities include: 

  • Entering and editing data in the database
  • Searching the web for authoritative sources of publication information
  • Investigating data discrepancies and contacting database vendors
  • Analyzing gray literature and other obscure and non-standardized publications
  • Exploring internal and external resources to identify authors and their affiliations
  • Comparing records to identify and resolve duplicates
  • Maintaining clear documentation for pending cases and system errors
  • Working with colleagues to balance the daily workload and continue developing standardization rules
  • Other tasks as assigned

The candidate will also be responsible for covering an opening or closing shift at the reference desk, as well as other shifts as needed.  This includes answering phones, checking materials in/out, helping clients locate print and digital collections, monitoring physical spaces, and maintaining printers, photocopiers and other library equipment.

Recent MLS graduates are encouraged to apply.  The position pays an hourly rate with limited benefits and is renewable annually.  Hours are Monday thru Friday, 9am-5pm or 8am-4pm (depending on shift coverage). 


  • At least 12 credits towards a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail regardless of task
  • Adaptable to changing work environments and departmental priorities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred:  Experience working with institutional repositories, abstracting and indexing databases (PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, etc) and integrated library systems (Innovative Millennium)
