The Brooklyn Collection, Brooklyn Public Library’s local history division, represents the Library’s largest and most important special collection. The Manager of Special Collections is responsible for providing leadership, management and planning of the Brooklyn Collection which includes monitoring budgets, providing programs, collection development, and staffing.  The manager ensures that the collection is available to the public, is preserved for future generations of users, and follows established collection and acquisition policies..  The manager oversees a variety of ongoing projects and works closely with the Development Department to seek private monies to fund projects.  This position reports to the Central Library Director.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify, evaluate, and acquire collections or unique items that will strengthen the Brooklyn Collection’s position as a renowned local history special collection
  • Ensure ongoing arrangement and description of archival materials and cataloging of historical photography collections
  • Direct preservation efforts including digitization, preservation photocopy, and conservation
  • Develop and maintain digitized Brooklyn Collection content in searchable databases and on the BPL website
  • Promote events and raise awareness of the collection via the Brooklyn Collection’s social media channels, including Brooklynology
  • Manage budgets that come from a variety of sources, including self-generated funds; identify grant opportunities and manage grant projects; cultivate potential donors
  • Plan and execute innovative programs and exhibitions including a monthly series of discussions on topics of local history
  • Ensure the safe storage and long-term preservation of archival materials in the Brooklyn Eagle morgue, the map room, and other storage and work areas
  • Develop processing, storage, and access policies in line with best practices in the library field
  • Create and maintain relationships with agencies and individuals working in related fields
  • Advocate for the Collection through written and oral presentations
  • Provide recommendations for disposition and maintenance of other collections, including the Hunt Collection of Historical Children’s Literature, the BPL institutional archives, and Central Library deck materials
  • Provide tours to prospective funders, trustees, elected officials, and other visitors
  • Provide specialized public service via in-person interview, email, or telephone
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate staff, including interns and volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned


Skills & Qualifications:

  • M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school preferably with specialization in archives and special collections
  • Public librarian’s professional certificate issued by the State of New York
  • Three years of demonstrated experience working in special collections
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in special collections
  • Working knowledge of special collections cataloging
  • Strong knowledge of Brooklyn’s geography and history
  • Comfortable with public speaking and making presentations to various audiences; speaks clearly and persuasively
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Working knowledge of the Library’s electronic reference resources including Sierra and Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience with Photoshop or other image processing software is a plus
  • Experience with digital assets management systems
  • Involvement with professional organizations
  • Ability to think strategically & analytically with strong problem solving skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
