Head, Watson Library of Business and Economics

Columbia University Libraries invites nominations and applications for the position of Head, Watson Library of Business and Economics in the Social Sciences Libraries division. Leading a team of professional and support staff, the Librarian ensures quality research and access services for students and faculty, engages and collaborates with partners in the Columbia Business School, Economics department and elsewhere, and provides research support and instruction through orientations, in-person, and virtual consultations. The Librarian assists in ongoing planning for emerging technologies and pedagogies that support the social sciences and business and economics fields in particular. The Librarian also participates with colleagues across the Libraries to support campus-wide service programs, including research and data information management and new forms of digital scholarship and learning.

Within the Social Sciences Libraries division, the Librarian collaborates with colleagues to plan and implement services in the Digital Social Science Center (DSSC). The DSSC collects data resources including major poling and demographic resources and supports data research methods, mapping, and analytic support for the entire campus.
Columbia Business School, one of the top ranked business schools in the country, offers MBA, PhD, and Executive Education programs and is committed to both educating and developing leaders who will create value for their stakeholders and society at large and developing new and innovative scholars and teachers who will advance the understanding and practice of management. The Business School will begin planning for a new campus, which includes the capacity for library space and services.

This position reports to the Director of the Social Sciences Libraries division and will work closely and collaboratively with divisional colleagues and other appropriate libraries and units. In addition to the Watson Library of Business and Economics, the SSL division's collections and services also support the Departments of Anthropology, Mathematics, Statistics, Political Science, Sociology, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the School of Journalism, the School of Social Work, and the School of International and Public Affairs.

The position directly supervises a staff of four professionals and leads the planning and delivery of user services and support in a unit of ten staff. The incumbent will have an opportunity to develop services to support a new Business School campus.

The successful candidate will have:

  • An MLS from an accredited institution, MBA, PhD, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams
  • Aptitude to plan, develop, and implement innovative services to support teaching, learning, and research
  • Excellent knowledge of business and economic resources
  • Experience in providing research support and instruction
  • Ability to work well with others in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to supporting and working in a multicultural and diverse environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
