Description

The Bedford Hills Free Library, an association library serving the Town of Bedford and hamlet of Bedford Hills, is seeking an energetic, smart, and experienced professional with strong library patron service skills for a position in Circulation Services

Primary Responsibilities

Circulation– Patron Services

  • Keep apprised of Westchester Library System (WLS) and the Library’s circulation and patron services policies and procedures 
  • Provide direct services to adult patrons, check circulating material in and out, assess and clear fines, process hold for inter-loan materials, handles sales transactions
  • Provide information on services to new patrons and process library card applications
  • Respond to phone and visitor inquiries
  • Assist patrons using computer, copy/printing, and faxing services

 Information and Referral

  • Provide information about resources and services through the Library as well as WLS; refer special inquiries to appropriate librarians
  • Work with librarians to maintain adult ready reference files for frequently asked questions (such as job search info, local resources, tax forms, voter/citizen info)
  • Handle archiving or recycling of reading room materials, magazines, newspapers, etc.
  • Maintain public reception area including posted bulletins; free publications, brochures etc.

Administration

  • Work with part-time staff, pages, or volunteers assigned to assist with circulation or library collection maintenance; assist with scheduling and circulation coverage
  • Manage petty cash fund for fines and fees; prepare regular circulation deposits
  • Manage library opening/closing; phone messages, signage, etc.
  • Ensure that facility security/safety policies are followed; report any incidents or issues
  • Maintaining circulation and visitor records; produce quarterly and annual reports
  • Attend WLS circulation meetings and other professional development events
  • Participate in Library staff meetings, special projects, and events as appropriate

This is a part-time, regular, non-exempt position; 28 hours/week, with occasional Saturday or evening hours.

Job Requirements

Experience

Library or customer service experience; familiarity and engagement with local community in all its diversity is a plus

Skills

Enthusiasm for reading, life-long learning, research, library science, or public service and interest in sharing information with others

Library or customer service experience; familiarity and engagement with local community in all its diversity

Excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communications skills

Ability to stand and lift library materials

Capable of working independently and as a member of a team

Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred, but not required

Computer Skills

Strong digital literacy, knowledge of office software, integrated library systems, digital resources

Education Required

B.A. or liberal arts background
