Assistant Director for Access and User Services

The Assistant Director for Access and User Services will provide overnight and evening management of New School Library Access and User Services operations.

Supervisory duties:

  • Assists the Director of Access and User Services with overseeing management of the library to ensure excellent customer service through effective staffing, facility maintenance, data analysis, finances, communications, and short/long-range planning 
  • Acts as a resource person for daily operations in the absence of the Director of Access and User Services
  • Supervises clerks and student workers assigned to Access and User Services, delegating roles and tasks to achieve departmental objectives and goals
  • Participates in the performance evaluation process
  • Assists with scheduling operational hours, ensuring appropriate staffing for services, approving time off requests, and updating calendars
  • Helps develop and implement a comprehensive and innovative training program that produces responsible, knowledgeable, and helpful students and clerical employees
  • Consults closely with department colleagues and supports them in their daily work, professional development, and interaction with patrons
  • Aids in management and design of the Library Summer Intern program, including selecting applicants, supervising interns, and developing special projects

Assessment duties:

  • Regularly assesses library service points and recommends revision of policies and procedures accordingly
  • Keeps accurate statistics for library operations, facilities, and collections usage across three branches
  • Expertly uses the Google suite of tools for advanced report writing and submission of quarterly and annual reports

Operational duties:

  • Assists with the implementation of new technologies and library services, including developing training materials and educating patrons
  • Oversees additional library services, such as item delivery and room bookings, proactively investigating and resolving any service issues
  • Administers the Library Proxy Borrower Account service
  • Works collaboratively on the LibAnswers platform to respond and resolve patron questions
  • Ensures that the stacks and print collection remain in good order and condition through management of a comprehensive shelf-reading and regular maintenance program
  • Constructs simple and clear communication messages for signage and patron-facing communications

Collaboration duties:

  • Actively participates and contributes to the development and implementation of library-wide strategic planning and goals
  • Collaborates with other library units to develop efficient work flows and accurate training materials to ensure staff provide excellent customer service across units
  • Works with the library’s information technologies unit to select, configure, and troubleshoot hardware and software
  • Actively engages with the global New School community to promote and communicate the services of the Libraries & Archives
  • Develops relationships with consortia partners
  • Provides leadership and input in library-wide committee work, including the Statistics and Analytics Group and the Social Media Group
  • Participates in local and national forums in order to stay current with trends regarding access and user services in academic libraries

Job Requirements

Experience

2-3 years experience in academic library management position preferred

Skills

Demonstrated ability to work thoughtfully, efficiently and independently with supervisor through email and other resources

Demonstrated supervisory skills and experience managing library employees

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues via online tools

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Computer Skills

Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suite, and familiarity with locating material in online catalogs and library databases.

Experience with the library management system Aleph is preferred.

Education Required

Bachelor’s degree in a four-year program
MLS degree preferred
