Description

BookOps is the shared technical services collaboration between the Brooklyn Public Library and the New York Public Library. BookOps coordinates the Selection, Acquisitions, Cataloging, Processing and Distribution of library materials. BookOps Cataloging is responsible for all aspects of the cataloging process for both organizations’ circulation and research collections.

 

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Collection Management, the Assistant Director of Cataloging:

  • Manages all aspects of the cataloging process of materials for BookOps member libraries research and circulating collections.  
  • In collaboration with NYPL Collections Strategy and BookOps NYPL Research Technical Services Coordinator the Assistant Director  of Cataloging maintains NYPL’s research cataloging priorities, and with NYPL Special Formats to formulate, interpret and implement cataloging policy.
  • Leads and directs BookOps cataloging staff.
  • Manages all aspects of the cataloging process of materials for BookOps member libraries.
  • Analyzes workflow, establishes productivity standards, and utilizes metrics to capture departmental and vendor cataloging and maintenance activities.  
  • Maintains NYPL Research cataloging priorities in collaboration with NYPL Collections Strategy and BookOps NYPL Research Technical Services Coordinator.
  • Collaborates with NYPL Special Formats to formulate, interpret, and implement cataloging policy that conforms to national standards.
  • Provides staff training related to cataloging activities.
  • Reviews and recommends licenses and/or contracts with materials vendors and publishers for the cataloging of library materials in all formats or related services.
  • Keeps abreast with current trends, emerging technologies, issues and research in library cataloging.

Job Requirements

Skills

At least 5 years of progressively responsible supervisory and cataloging experience.
knowledge of RDA, AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNAF, Dewey Decimal Classification, LC Classification, Name and Subject Headings, as well as OCLC classification policies and procedures.
Experience in managing vendor cataloging services, including those pertaining to shelf-ready product delivery.
Experience in designing or updating workflows to incorporate new technologies or shifts in cataloging priorities.
Knowledge of integrated library systems and statistical analysis.
Understanding of typical collection development, acquisitions, and processing practices of a large library.
Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.

Computer Skills

Education Required

ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies with relevant professional experience.
