Job Information

Founded in 1983, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is one of the world’s leading independent environmental research organizations. Areas of expertise include disease ecology, forest and freshwater health, climate change, urban ecology, and invasive species.

Studies by our scientists have been instrumental in informing the Clean Air Act, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and environmental management practices throughout the Northeast, including the Hudson River, New York’s Catskill and Adirondack forests, and the watershed of Baltimore, Maryland.

The Archive Intern will work with the library director to assess institutional archive collections (maps, historical papers) for conservation needs and possible digitization. The intern will create Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids for key collection(s). The intern will also gain experienceevaluating archival collections for digitization, creating standardized archival finding aids, and working with open source information systems.

With guidance from the library director and staff scientists, the intern may have the opportunity to conduct a research project relating to some aspect of the history of science (specifically ecological or environmental science).

Upon completion of the internship, the intern will be expected to complete a written report summarizing all findings and workflows for EAD finding aids, and recommendations for other archival collections.

This is an unpaid internship, but we will work with academic institutions to provide credit for the internship.  Early applicants may have access to on-site housing.
