So You Want to Build a Web Archive....

Now that we’ve investigated the basics of web archiving, description and access, and collection development, let’s get to brass tacks on actually getting started on building an archive of websites!

This webinar will cover the process of getting started with Archive-It and Webrecorder, crawling your first few web pages, and immediate next steps.

We are excited to be joined by Jefferson Bailey (Internet Archive) and Dragan Espenschied (Web Recorder).

Jefferson Bailey, Director, Web Archiving Programs, joined Internet Archive in Summer 2014. Prior to joining IA, he worked on strategic initiatives, digital preservation, archives, and digital collections at institutions such as Metropolitan New York Library Council, Library of Congress, Brooklyn Public Library, and Frick Art Reference Library and has worked in the archives at NARA, NASA, and Atlantic Records. He has an MLIS in Archival Studies from University of Pittsburgh and a BA in English from Oberlin College. He once flew NASA's Space Shuttle Simulator and caused, according to the flight engineer, "minor landing gear damage." He has deaccessioned all records of this event from his personal archive.

Dragan Espenschied (*1975 Germany) is a media artist, digital conservator and 8-bit musician.

As an artist, Espenschied focuses on the historization of Digital Culture from the perspective of computer users. Together with net art pioneer Olia Lialina he created a significant body of work about writing a culture-centric history of the networked age.

Since 2011, they together have been restoring and analyzing the deleted online community GeoCities.

Espenschied worked with the transmediale festival’s archive and the Vilem Flusser Archive.

Since April 2014, he is leading the Digital Conservation Program at Rhizome.
