To best serve today's patrons, librarians need a broad understanding of the wide spectrum of the arts and popular culture that are of interest to our users. From gaming to comics to cosplay to streaming video, librarians can become both advocates of and experts in these non-traditional collections. Led by Caroline Fuchs and Michael Handis, the Pop Culture SIG aims to engage librarians in a dialogue on the wide range of cultural productions and practices that are redefining library collections and the resulting changes in practice in librarianship.
Please join us for the inaugural meeting of the Pop Culture SIG at noon on March 8. After introductions, members will have the opportunity to develop a working definition of popular culture as it relates to this SIG, and to help plan for upcoming meetings. Time permitting, we can discuss some of the challenges and obstacles to incorporating "pop culture" into our libraries.
