Command Line Basics

Speaker Jeremia Kimelman

Jeremia is a web developer who is passionate about using technology to promote political change. He is currently working at 18F, where he is building open source software within the Federal government.

The command line is an incredibly powerful yet intimidating tool. The lack of a familiar graphical user interface makes it seem obscure, but to get the most leverage out of open source tools and the community you'll need to feel comfortable using it.

Join us for a two hour introduction to the command line facilitated by Jeremia Kimelman. We'll explore this different mechanism for navigating the filesystem, using applications and feeling more at home in your terminal. From moving around different folders, to creating and managing files, and leveraging some command line utilities to download files over HTTP.

No experience with the command line is required, though it is helpful if you already have one installed. If you're on a Mac or Linux machine, you're already all set. If you're on Windows or plan to use METRO’s laptops, please indicate this on our registration form and we will be in touch.

Fees for this event are $15 for METRO, myMETRO, and ESLN Members. The non-member rate is $30.
