Karl-Rainer Blumenthal is a Web Archivist for Archive-It, the subscription web archiving service of the Internet Archive. Karl helps Archive-It's 400+ partner institutions to collect and preserve web-based resources through software training and development, technical support, and documentation. His enthusiasm for all things web archiving extends from his term as a National Digital Stewardship Resident and Archive-It partner with the New York Art Resources Consortium (NYARC), for whom he developed web archiving quality assurance and preservation standards. Karl holds a BA in History of Art from Haverford College and an MS in Library and Information Science from Drexel University.


Sumitra Duncan is the Web Archiving Coordinator at the Frick Art Reference Library. In this role, she manages the web archiving program of the New York Art Resources Consortium (NYARC), which consists of the research libraries of The Frick Art Reference Library, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Brooklyn Museum. She serves as the co-chair of the Web Archiving Special Interest Group (SIG) at METRO and the Archive-It New York Users Group. Sumitra holds a BA in English Literature from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MS in Library and Information Science from Pratt Institute.


Anna Perricci, our host for this webinar, is a project manager for the Eastern Academic Scholars’ Trust.  May 2013-October 2015, she was a Web Archiving Project Librarian and led collaborative web archiving initiatives based at Columbia University Libraries through the Web Resources Archiving Collaboration project (funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation).  She earned a MSI in Archives and Records Management and a Graduate Teaching Certificate at the University of Michigan.  Anna is currently the education coordinator for the SAA Web Archiving Roundtable.

This is the first in a series of four webinars on the subject of web archiving. This webinar will feature an overview of web archiving concepts, with a broad overview of the practice.

Karl-Rainer Blumenthal, Web Archivist for Archive-It at the Internet Archive, will introduce the current state of the field, its general concepts, technologies, and potential roles in libraries and archives. Sumitra Duncan, Web Archivist for the New York Art Resources Consortium (NYARC) at the Frick Art Reference Library, will share the motivations that lead institutions like her own to invest in web archiving as a collection development and preservation strategy, and the lessons learned from building and curating web archives for NYARC specifically.
