Massive Open Online Courses: A Discussion
This Distance Education SIG Meeting will focus on the phenomenon of Massive Open Online courses, commonly known as MOOCs.
Ben Turner, Instructional Services Librarian at St. John’s University, will discuss why they remain controversial, and outline some of the promises and challenges associated with MOOCs. Nora Almeida (Baruch College), author of “A New Polemic: Libraries, MOOCs, and the Pedagogical Landscape,” will discuss the role of libraries in supporting MOOCs, and the potential of MOOCs to disrupt the publishing industry. Luke Swarthout will provide a case study of how New York Public Library, in conjunction with Coursera, has acted as a “hub” for MOOCs by hosting discussion groups and connecting students with relevant collections to enhance their learning experiences. Discussion will follow.
