Ellen Naylor is the CEO of The Business Intelligence Source, entering its 20th year as a full service competitive intelligence (CI) consultancy. Ellen specializes in primary collection, that is conversing with people to gain information and insight. Ellen started Bell Atlantic's (Verizon) CI unit in 1985 and has been in the world of CI ever since. She is a long-time member of SCIP (Strategic Competitive Intelligence Professionals); is a SCIP fellow and catalyst award winner; and has served in leadership roles at SCIP on its board and running chapters. She is also a member of SLA, AIIP, and ASP associations. Ellen is a prolific speaker in the CI world and is a columnist for CI Magazine on cooperative intelligence. Ellen earned her MBA at the University of Virginia's Colgate Darden School and her BA at the University of Notre Dame.

Librarians and other Information Professionals have a competitive advantage when it comes to collecting information; they already know how to conduct an informational interview. However, many are uncomfortable collecting and analyzing competitive intelligence. Competitors are just a small part of the competitive intelligence puzzle, since it includes the entire marketplace including customers and suppliers, for example, as well as the macro environemnt -- economic, social, technological, environmental, and political influences and trends.
