HOLIDAY PARTY--12/9
Please join us for the first annual myMETRO SIG holiday party. All are welcome--please bring your librarian friends. We'll have tea and coffee on hand; you supply dessert and sparkling conversation.
Event: myMETRO SIG meeting (This is a free event, but it is also a potluck. Bring your favorite holiday treats.)
Date: Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 5:30-7pm
Location: METRO's Training Center 57 East 11th Street, 4th floor
R.S.V.P. to Rachel King at experimentofgreen@gmail.com
EVENT RESCHEDULED
The myMetro SIG starts off the new semester with a program focusing on education.
"Continuing education" isn't just for adults getting their bachelor's degrees anymore--it's now a requirement for most of us in the rapidly-changing American workforce.
Educational opportunities for beginning and mid-career librarians abound. This evening's program will be a panel discussion about education and retraining within the context of your career. What skills will you need to acquire for the future (and plan for today)? When is a one-time workshop enough, and when does a more long-term commitment to education make sense? What are today's library students learning that mid-career librarians should know about, too?
We look forward to hearing your questions.

June 4 panel discussion on "D.I.Y networking."
Are you curious about what social networking can do for your career? Web 2.0 is offering unprecedented opportunities for like-minded professionals to find one another via the internet. Our three panelists have been able to organize events in a way that would have been impossible just a few years ago. On June 4th they'll talk about how they've employed new technology to achieve the time-honored goal of bringing people together.
Stephanie Gross is an Electronic Reserves Librarian Yeshiva University, as well as Organizer of the NY Librarians Meetup, a group for librarians and library students "to gather and discuss developments in the field, professional opportunities, books, emerging technologies, library 2.0, and good old-fashioned librarianship."
Sarah Murphy is a school librarian in Manhattan and works with students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Sarah and Maria Falgoust founded the Desk Set (www.thedeskset.org), a community-building group for librarians and bibliophiles, in 2006.
Christian Zabriskie is a Young Adult librarian at the Central Library of Queens Public Library in Jamaica Queens. He is the founder of Urban Librarians Unite, a social/professional group that exists as a meeting ground for librarians from different disciplines and systems. Urban Librarians Unite meets on the last Tuesday of every month at The Creek in Long Island City.
Networking starts at 5:30 at the METRO office at 57 E. 11th Street, 4th floor. The event is free, but an R.S.V.P. is required. Please email Rachel King at experimentofgreen at gmail.com.
