From Metro Collaborate
- Kevin's Notes
- Joanna's Presentation
Date: Friday, September 21, 2007 Time:2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Location: METRO Topic; Many librarians agree that their current library catalogs do not adequately meet the needs of their users. With so many new technologies emerging on the web scene, what tools seem most useful to enhance our catalogs and better serve our users? Let's discuss some of the strategies and software that libraries are using to improve their catalogs and to make better use of the rich metadata that accompanies most library records.
We will discuss strategies and standards for integrating catalog data with a wider body of materials and search services that patrons utilize for research. We will look at how Web 2.0 technologies are being used to enhance the user's search experience and open up catalog data to third-party applications seeking to utilize information about library holdings.
We'll have a demonstration of how the powerful search engine platform Solr/Lucene can be used to a build a next generation faceted search interface around MARC data. We will also discuss other emerging technologies that are driving the implementation of next-generation catalog projects in the library world.
The types of new technologies for catalogs we’d like to look at and discuss include:
