Colleagues and Friends Take the Stage at SLA NY's Conference Next Month

by Davis Erin Anderson, Community Engagement Manager, METRO

As SLA NY’s Conference and Expo takes shape, it’s been great to see familiar names populate the agenda. A number of colleagues in the METRO community will share their best wisdom and advice on topics from Twitter to the adaptive project framework on Thursday, September 18, 2014.

A keynote address from SLA President Jill Strand will start the day. Her talk will address the value of membership and the future of information. “Jill is dynamic and innovative,” says Clara Cabrera, Team Lead at Wilmer Hale and a member of myMETRO. “She inspires me to reach deeper into myself and seek paths to further myself in this profession.”

Following the keynote, SLA NY’s conference takes two tracks: social media and professional development. The social media track includes a discussion on Twitter, in which NYPL’s Director of Digital Engagement will participate. "I'm very excited,” Johannes Neuer says, “to share the story of how NYPL engages book and library lovers in New York City and around the world through compelling content related to our collections, programs, and reading recommendations.”

The professional development sessions, meanwhile, focus on furthering your career through certifications, gaining project management skills, and marketing your skillset. Our Career Development Consultant Ellen Mehling will lead a group discussion at 3:15pm. "I am excited to have been asked to participate in SLA NY's conference next month,” she said, “I am especially looking forward to leading a discussion on personal presentation and self-marketing; it will be interesting to see what comes up in this group conversation!"

The event also includes a speed mentoring session (additional registration required) and access to vendors throughout the day.

The fees for SLA NY's conference are on a sliding scale. Remember, though: if you’re a myMETRO member, you are eligible to receive a scholarship through METRO. If you have any questions about that, please reach out to Tom Nielsen, Member Services Manager, at tnielsen [at] metro [dot] org.
