Queens Library Staffer Named New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year

The New York Times Community Affairs Department and the Knowledge Network have honored Feliciano Jaime “Chito” Atienza with the 2008 New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year Award. ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) classes provide English language instruction to learners of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Mr. Atienza has worked as an ESOL Teacher with the Queens Library’s Adult Learner–ESOL Program for more than 10 years, and with the YMCA International ELESAIR Project for 22 years. He received his award in March at a special ceremony at The Times building. Along with the $2,500 award, Mr. Atienza was featured in a New York Times article announcing the 2008 winner and other honorees.
