Tools for Managing Digital Collections: BagIt & Bagger
Tuesday, June 18, 2013 - 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

BagIt is a specification for packaging digital files for storage and transfer. It was developed by the Library of Congress with California Digital Library and Stanford University. BagIt allows you to group together related files (including content and metadata files) in a single "bag." Each bag includes a manifest or inventory of the files it contains, as well as checksums for each file within the bag and for the bag itself. BagIt can be used to more safely transfer files between systems, in delivery from vendor to client after digitizing content, and for ingest or storage of files in preservation repositories. This introductory workshop will provide an overview of the BagIt specification and the tools that support it. With a focus on practical use cases, the workshop will cover the creation, exchange, and verification of bags using command line utilities as well as graphical user interface tools such as Bagger.
