New Event: Preservation of Artifacts in Libraries and Archives

The following event was recently added to METRO’s Professional Development calendar.

Preservation of Artifacts in Libraries and Archives: Understanding the Basics
Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM

Why do books and paper deteriorate? How can libraries and archives protect important collections? This half-day class will introduce the participant to the mechanisms of deterioration, and then apply that knowledge to begin planning preservation activities. This class, presented in conjunction with ALA's Preservation Week, will consist of lecture and discussions, and will provide participants with the basic knowledge to understand the techniques of safe exhibition, care and handling of collections, working with a conservator, requirements for storage, and emergency preparedness. Participants will leave the class with a set of resources to help them begin to develop or expand their own in-house preservation programs.
