Tools for Managing Digital Collections: ExifTool
Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
ExifTool is a free, platform-independent, command-line oriented application for reading, writing, and editing embedded metadata in a wide variety of files. ExifTool’s ability to read and output embedded metadata is widely used within file-based collection management workflows. ExifTool is simultaneously simple and complex, and this workshop will focus on the basics of using this tool. Because ExifTool is command-line oriented, the beginning of this workshop will be dedicated to the basics of using and navigating the command-line interface. Following this, there will be a brief discussion of embedded metadata with a focus on Exif and IPTC before delving into basic hands-on exercises using ExifTool. After the basics are tackled, there will be a combination of individual and group exercises to gain a better understanding of ExifTool and the metadata it provides access to, and to explore some potential uses of ExifTool within collection management workflows.
