"Culture in Transit" Seeks to Shine Light on NYC's Cultural Heritage Collections

by Davis Erin Anderson, Community Engagement Manager, METRO

In partnership with the Empire State Digital Network and Brooklyn Public Library, we've joined the latest Knight Foundation News Challenge. Our proposed project, Culture in Transit, will expand our extant digital services with a mobile digitization unit that brings expertise and equipment to NYC’s smaller libraries and archives.

An urban corollary to Scannebago, Culture In Transit will provide on-site digitization guidance and mobile infrastructure to collecting organizations. Librarians at the institutions we visit will be able to add their newly scanned resources to our digital collections, which serve as an on-ramp to Digital Public Library of America, and Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Visual Heritage image database.

Our proposal is one of many that have been submitted as an answer to Knight Foundation’s challenge to leverage libraries as a platform to build more knowledgeable communities. The submissions phase of the project runs through September 30th. We encourage our members to submit their own proposal, and to sign up to attend Knight’s reception at NYPL this Friday, September 26, 2014.

We hope you’ll take a moment to read more about Culture in Transit and show your support by signing up and applauding our project. Thanks!
