Carol Sheffer, a former member of METRO’s Board of Trustees, is retiring as Deputy Library Director of Queens Library, where she has worked in various capacities for 15 years.
In July, Sheffer completed a one-year term as Vice President of the Public Library Association (PLA) and began her term as PLA President, a position she will hold until July 2009. A division of the American Library Association, PLA’s mission is to enhance the development and effectiveness of public library staff and public library services.
Says Sheffer, “I am eagerly looking forward to having even more time to devote to my duties as PLA president. In fact, I will spend the first week of my retirement attending the Public Library Authorities Conference in Liverpool, UK. It’s an exciting time for PLA, as recent bylaws changes have created online communities of practice that allow more members to be actively involved in the organization, even if they cannot attend conferences. I am honored to be able to lead the team as it ventures into the future.”
