22 Days In: A Note from Nate Hill, METRO's New Executive Director

Hello, METRO membership!

I’m here! I am so pleased to be back in New York leading this fabulous organization. The move from Tennessee was epic, and my family is settling in and enjoying our new lifestyle. I began my library career 15 years ago working for the Brooklyn Public Library, and even though my work has taken me to San Jose, California and Chattanooga, Tennessee, New York City feels like home to me.

new-profile-pic.JPGThe first few weeks at METRO have been a whirlwind. I’ve been getting to know our talented and dedicated staff better every day. I’ve been observing METRO’s special interest groups in action. I’ve attended workshops and lectures in the beautiful space on 11th street in Manhattan. I’ve dug into the very important work going on with the Knight News Challenge project Culture in Transit, as well as the Empire State Digital Network, our Digital Public Library of America service hub. You, as members, know METRO does *so much* for the library community, and I’m very proud to be a part of that.

Still, I see opportunities for METRO to do so much more. New York City and Westchester County are special places. This area is home to so much innovation, knowledge, and talent both within and beyond the library community. I believe that METRO is well positioned to be the leading laboratory to model new modes of learning and collaboration and to prototype innovative library, archive, and museum projects.

This diverse membership of academic libraries, archives, art libraries, museum libraries, public libraries, special libraries, hospital libraries, and more represents an unparalleled opportunity. Moving forward, I will look for opportunities to build new relationships and fortify existing relationships across the METRO membership so that we can push the boundaries of what is possible in our field.

How can we make this happen? Let’s talk about it! I hope that this summer you’ll reach out to me with your thoughts and ideas about what the future should look like. Call me. Write me. Catch me at one of the METRO happy hour events.
