Virtual Reference SIG Meeting Update

The next meeting of the Virtual Reference SIG will be tomorrow (Tuesday, May 25), from 10 am to 12 noon at the offices of METRO (57 East 11th Street, NY, NY). We will be discussing the pros and cons of different staffing options for various digital reference services (email reference, chat/IM reference. text reference, etc.) We’ll look at the following staffing questions:

  • Where Will You Staff the Service(s): personal office or cubicle; shared office or cubicle; reference desk; home
  • Which Personnel Will Staff the Service(s): librarians (all or a subset); library staff (all or a subset); library school students; staff from other libraries in your cooperative
  • Hours: 24/7; when the library is open; when the reference desk is open; catch as catch can
  • Will the Person Staffing One Service Cover Another at the Same Time: no; if yes, which combinations make sense
